Design and Technology

Intent:

At Carlton Primary Academy, children receive a design and technology curriculum which allows them to exercise their creativity through designing and making. Our DT curriculum is highly ambitious and is underpinned by precise, current, robust research, which is embedded throughout the curriculum. It is designed in response to the needs of all children; enabling all pupils to access content and make progress. The curriculum is demanding and highly engaging for all pupils, matching activities to the curriculum content precisely and setting high expectations, promoting our core value of excellence. The children are taught to combine their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding in order to design and make a product. Curriculum resources and teaching material are of high quality, ambitious, inspiring and supports pupils’ acquisition of knowledge and skills precisely, encouraging pupils to take pride in the pieces they produce. The curriculum goes beyond the expected so that pupils have access to a wide, rich set of experiences, and extra-curricular activities, coherently planned in order to nurture, develop and stretch their talents and interests. The DT curriculum is precisely sequenced bridging the gap between the EYFS and Ks1 curriculum, so that component skills and knowledge are incrementally progressed across year groups, enabling progress to be evidenced across school. Skills are taught progressively to ensure that all children develop as they move through school. Evaluation is an integral part of the design process and allows children to adapt and improve their product. The curriculum ensures that pupil’s progress successfully to their next stages of education and beyond, understanding what learning will be key to their success in becoming valued members of their community. The curriculum is coherently designed for pupils to experience a well-sequenced, clear path to learning, connecting new knowledge to existing knowledge, working towards the production of an end product, either independently or as part of a team.
