Autumn Term Two
November 5th, 2018 - December 21st, 2018
In November, we visited Crucial Crew in Rotherham.
We met a number of key workers from the emergency services including the police, fire & rescue and ambulance service who taught us some important lessons in staying safe and being a responsible citizen.
During the day, we:
- learnt how to give basic first aid and use the recovery position.
- learnt about the youth court and the justice process.
- learnt about how to protect ourselves in the event of a house fire and the importance of planning an escape procedure and looking after our smoke alarms.
- studied anti-social behaviour scenarios and the consequences of anti-social behaviour.
- revised safe road use and the impact of not doing so.
- learnt how to travel safely on public transport.
The children's responses to the day were extremely positive and they took away some very valuable lessons.
World War One
Our topic this half term is World War One. We will be marking the centenary of the end of the war in various areas of the curriculum throughout November, taking opportunities to study the bravery and achievements of our incredible soldiers.
We will be studying the following texts:
'War Game' by Michael Foreman.
'War Horse' by Michael Morpurgo.
Do take the opportunity to question your child about these texts. They will be using these books in order to write non-chronological reports about the life of a WWI soldier as well as write a narrative using a non-human narrator.
In Art, we will be studying the WWI inspired paintings of the painter Percy Wyndham-Lewis whilst developing our shading and painting skills.
In History, we will be studying in depth the wider impact of the war and looking at the social impact of the war. We will appraise propaganda posters from the time and discuss the moral impact of propaganda. We will also study the events which led up to the war in 1914 and the impact of the war after an end to hostilities was finally called one hundred years ago. We will study the symbolism of the poppy and look at the work of the Royal British Legion.
In Religious Education, we will be studying the festival of Diwali and why it is important to the Hindu community both in Britain and the rest of the world.
In Science, we will be studying 'Earth in Space.'
Please look at our webpage gallery to look at some of the excellent work being produced by our pupils.

Autumn Term One - September 5th - October 26th 2018
Our topic in Autumn Term One is 'Coal Mining', allowing us to explore our local history and the lasting impact of the mining industry on the lives of people in Barnsley and South Yorkshire. We will be looking at the early history of coal mining, particularly in the local area and comparing the lives of families and children, to families and children now. We will also be looking at the effect of the Industrial Revolution on the lives of children working in the mines. We will look at the impact of the miner's strike and finally bring the topic to a close through studying the decline of coal mining.
