April 16th – April 20th 2012 Welcome back! This half term our new IPC theme is “Myths and Legends”. Your child’s new IPC homework grid is below March 26th – March 30th 2012 Goldfinches win best attendance in school for Spring Term! A huge “congratulations” goes out to Class AS who were top of the attendance board for the spring term of 2012. The children enjoyed a fun day with Mrs. Harrison on Thursday (29th). They created scratch art pictures as well as polystyrene eggs. See future webpage updates for photographs of their brilliant day! From the Woodland Diaries… This week we went into the woodland to complete a treasure hunt. We searched for clues amongst the trees and bushes that led us to photographs in and around the wooded area. Please see our latest photo gallery to view our lesson. Tropical Butterfly House visit We set off on a beautiful March morning to Tropical Butterfly House in North Anston on Tuesday morning. It was so warm, we decided to leave our coats on the coach! The first creature we met on arrival was a hawk that was eagerly tucking into a dead chicken! First, we met Paul who talked to us about some of the birds of prey on the site. We learnt about their senses and how they are different to ours and of some of the areas of the world the birds are native to. Paul then allowed us to wear a special falconry handling glove and we were able to hold one of the wild birds ourselves. One of the birds was called Red, the same name as our alien friend in the Magpies classroom! Those children that did not want to wear the glove were happy to stroke the birds. The owl in particular was a favourite of the children. Next, we went on a tour of the farm. We met a very proud peacock who was more than happy to show us his bright green, blue and turquoise feathers. Then we had an opportunity to feed the baby goats. We learnt about some of the machinery used on farms up and down the country and about some of the tasks typically undertaken by a farmer. Later, we explored the tropical butterfly house itself which was even hotter inside than the outside temperature. It needed to be in order to keep the various species inside alive and healthy! We saw some beautiful butterflies and moths and some less beautiful stick insects and snakes. At the end of our brilliant day, we spent some time in the adventure park where the children played on the tricycles as well as the zip wire. We ended our day with a special goody bag and lots and lots of wonderful memories of our trip. Back at school, we talked to the children about what they had enjoyed and what they would remember the most about their trip to the butterfly house. Here are some of their comments… “I really liked the talking parrot. He whistled really good!” “I saw some creatures that I have never seen before. It was fantastic!” “The best bit was feeding the goats” “Stroking the owl was fun because they were really fluffy!” “The owl felt like a duvet. He was really nice to hold”. “Seeing the vulture was awesome!” “I really enjoyed stroking the baby chics. They were really cute!” All the KS1 staff would like to thank the staff at the Tropical Butterfly House for making our day out so enjoyable. We would also like to thank the children for their exemplary behaviour throughout the day Please look at our photo gallery for the photographs documenting our trip. We wish all our parents, carers and children a very happy Easter!

March 19th – March 23rd 2012 From the Golden Book… Dominik from the Goldfinch class was awarded for his outstanding achievements in reading on Thursday. Dominik has made tremendous progress this half term both with Mr. Smith in class and with Mrs. Cox during his 1:1 sessions. Very well done Dominik. Your golden award is richly deserved From the Woodland Diaries… On Thursday, we played the naming game on the field where we had to introduce a friend using an exciting adjective. We also played rabbit and fox. Two children were blindfolded and one had a set of bells. Both children had to find the other within a wall of Magpies and Goldfinches. Some woodland learners found each other a lot quicker than others but we had lots of fun in our search. In the woodland, we separated into teams to create some large mini-beasts using lots of woodland matter. Later we completed a welly wander. We tried to match as many items in the woodland to each letter of the alphabet. Admittedly we struggled with ‘x’ and ‘z’ in particular but with some imaginative use of adjective, we did a pretty good job at fulfilling the other twenty four letters. We had lots and lots of fun. Please see the latest photo gallery to watch snapshots of our lesson. Church Visit Our children visited Carlton church this week as part of their Religious Educational studies. The children were greeted by Father Rodney and were welcomed warmly into church where they learnt about some of the special features of the church, including the organ, the font, the altar and the pews. Father Rodney spoke about Jesus and introduced the children to the bell ropes. They also learnt about the significance and symbolism of candle lighting and how people feel comforted by the act of lighting these in remembrance of very special people in their lives. The children from Magpies class had lots to tell Mr. Smith about their trip back in school. Here are some of the comments from Class RS… “It was good going to church because church is posh!” “It was fun because the doors were strange when you walked in and were not like the doors in mummy’s house”. “It was excellent because I like learning new words and church has lots of posh words!” “It was awesome because we were allowed to light candles”. “I like the organ best because I really like the sound it makes”. “I liked it because we learnt about god and the importance of the church”. All the staff in the KS1 unit would like to thank Father Rodney wholeheartedly for showing the children around the church and talking to them about it. We would also like to say thank you to the children for their behaviour to and from the church and the respect they showed once inside the church. Assessments This week, the children have been working studiously in the unit on their latest round of Reading, Writing and Mathematics assessments. Well done everybody for your tremendous efforts during what has been a very hard-working week. Stained Glass Windows In art and design this week, to compliment this week’s church visit, the children in Classes MB and RS looked at examples of, and appraised, stained glass windows. They then set to work on designing some of their own using a range of art media including paint, crayon and pencil. The windows look beautiful and the children enjoyed personalising their windows with images that are important and special to them. The Reading Miles Global Challenge – Your views and thoughts Next Thursday (March 29th 2012) after a month of truly fantastic and enthusiastic reading, our Reading Miles Global Challenge reaches its final journey, accumulated by our fun ‘Paperback Heroes’ day on Friday, March 30th when we will honour our favourite fictional heroes by dressing up for the day as a famous book or comic character. On this day, we shall also be holding our ‘around the world token’ draws where the first prize will be a kindle, followed by second prizes of book fair tokens for the sum of £5 to be spent at our forthcoming book fair in May. We look forward to an exciting finale to our challenge. This week, the Communications Team took some time to find out your views and valuable opinions about our first Reading Miles Global Challenge. We would like to thank all the parents, pupils and staff who took the time to feedback to us as your ideas will inform any future challenge. Overall, you have been very positive about the challenge. Here is just a taste of some of the views expressed by those who have taken part. “Brilliant idea! My child’s reading has come along so much more since doing the challenge!” – y1 parent “It has made both my children excited and enthusiastic about reading” – KS1 parent “The incentive of the kindle has inspired my daughter immensely in this challenge. I think it’s great!” – FS parent. “The challenge is really nice, especially when I read with my daddy and my mummy” – y1 pupil “Once I get started, I can never stop!” – y1 pupil “I keep learning new words by reading” – y1 pupil Well done to everyone who has taken part with such excitement and dedication. We look forward to a fun and memorable Paperback Heroes day next week. In the meantime, happy reading! Tropical Butterfly World We will be setting off on Tuesday, March 27th 2012 to Tropical Butterfly World. The hyperlink below will show you what your child will be experiencing if they cannot wait until then! We look forward to a lovely day. Look out for the next webpage diary entry for photographs and notes about our trip. This link will take you to the Tropical Butterfly World website…

March 12th – March 16th 2012 Persuasion This week, the children have been learning how to write persuasively. We discussed how persuasion could be both a positive and a negative thing depending on the context. Mr. Smith and troublemaker (our nuisance pet bird) tried to persuade the children to press a mysterious flashing button on the whiteboard, even though the sign above the button said not to! We then created a conscience alley where half the class tried to persuade a child walking down the alley not to press the button whilst a conflicting line of persuaders on the opposite side of the alley tried to appeal to their naughty nature and persuade them to press the button. We discussed ways in which we are persuaded to do things and how language can help us do this. Later, we wrote a persuasive letter to an imaginary supply teacher, positively persuading them to take all the children into the woodland area to learn. Tropical Butterfly World is on Tuesday, March 27th 2012! We are going on our first trip of the new-year to the Tropical Butterfly World very soon. Those of you who have kindly completed your permission slips will be receiving more information about the trip shortly. We are looking forward to a really exciting day!

March 5th – March 9th 2012 Mache Insects and Flowers We had lots of fun in our DT lessons this week. The children in Mrs Blythe’s class set to work to create some brilliant bugs and fabulous flowers using balloons and lots of newspapers. The creations are currently adorning the display board outside Mr Smith’s classroom so please take a look during your morning visits into the unit. Woodland Learning This week, we went into the woodland to make models of mini-beasts using dead natural litter. We used sticks, branches, leaf matter and soil to make some inspirational insects. We also used drama to recreate the movements of some of our favourite bugs. Please look at the photographs in our recent gallery to see the fun we had exploring our woodland habitat. Forthcoming Educational Visits Next week, we will look forward to our visit to Carlton church to support our religious educational learning. Additionally, we will of course be visiting Tropical Butterfly World on Tuesday, March 27th 2012 (details to follow). We ask for your cooperation in returning any outstanding parental consent forms as soon as possible so the next phase of our organisation can commence. Thank you for your support

February 27th – March 2nd 2012 Woodland in the Goldfinches and Magpies Classes What a brilliant week we have enjoyed linked to our woodland learning and our new IPC theme “Flowers & Insects”! On Thursday, in the lovely early March sunshine, we went into the woodland looking for lots of mini-beasts and we soon discovered that our woodland habitat is home to many different insects and creepy crawlies. We found slugs, worms, centipedes and ladybirds. We learnt the importance of respecting little lives, handling them with care and carefully returning them to where we found them. We then recorded our findings on a chart and compared what we had found with others. Whilst we were in the Woodland, we played lots of games including the drumming game and the happy bag snatch game. Classes AS and RS will be going into the Woodland each Thursday so please help us by ensuring your child has the correct woodland kit each Thursday. Pictograms and Bar Charts Classes AS and RS have been working together to create bar charts and pictograms. We went into the hall and constructed some human bar charts before collating information regarding what we like learning about during our Woodland lessons. We have used our data to create our own charts. The Global Reading Challenge has begun! ~ Join in with the journey! Thank you very much to all the children who brought in their favourite books to share in class on Thursday as part of our Global Reading Challenge launch. We had a big range of fiction and non-fiction books to share and the children really enjoyed sharing them with their friends. We have many children who have already travelled 500 reading miles and reached Paris, France and we cannot wait to award our first Bronze certificates soon to those children reaching Warsaw, Poland. Many happy reading miles to everyone in the KS1 unit Well done to Hattie in Class RS who, by Friday, March 2nd, had already achieved her Bronze certificate in her Global Reading Challenge Artists at the ready! The children have been learning about primary and secondary colours in Mr. Smith’s art lessons this week. They have learnt how to mix secondary colours and about the differences between colours and shades. Yellow Stars and Golden Awards A number of children in Class RS will be receiving their yellow stars for achieving 25 chance card status this week. Well done Magpies for all your hard work. Also, congratulations to Luke Gallienne Storey and Charli Hayward for their golden awards for working hard and enthusiastically during the recent measurement challenge in Mr. Smith’s mathematics class. Ant Houses We have some new friends in the KS1 unit. Each class now has an ant house and the children have enjoyed learning about our resident mini-beasts. Ants do not like to be in bright sunlight and enjoy eating small pieces of fruit. Trips Pending We will soon be announcing a series of visits in the KS1 unit to support our learning in both Science and RE. Keep in touch with our webpage for further details. Parent Consultations A big ‘thank you’ goes to all the parents who came to speak to us regarding their child’s progress in school. If you were unable to visit us this week but would like to make an appointment in the near future, please speak to your child’s English teacher. We will be happy to accommodate you for a meeting |

February 21st – February 25th 2012 Indoor shoes If you have visited our KS1 unit this week, you will have seen that we have had some new carpets fitted throughout our classrooms and corridors which we believe have improved the learning environment for all our children. More than ever, in order to keep our rooms tidy and clean, we request your support in ensuring your child has access to a pair of indoor shoes that they store safely in their pump bags at the end of the day. Many thanks for your continued support. New homework grid Our new IPC theme is “Flowers and Insects”. Please see the grid below for a range of activities your child is free to attempt as part of their home learning throughout this new half term. Mallards, (Class MB), Magpies (Class RS) & Goldfinches (Class AS) - Homework choices for the IPC theme “Flowers and Insects” w/b February 21st, February 27th, March 5th, March 12th, March 19th & March 26th inclusive. Please support your child in selecting one of the homework options from the grid below and return to school each week. Once your child has attempted a given option and handed the homework in to school, please ensure your child chooses a different homework option the following week. Encourage your child to select a balance of writing, research and creative options throughout the term. Thank you

February 6th – February 10th 2012 Carlton’s First “Global Reading Challenge” launches on March 1st! From March 1st – May 18th 2012, Carlton Primary will be encouraging its young readers to come on board and join us as we travel the globe in reading hours! March 1st 2012 is “World Book Day”, and to celebrate this important event, we are inviting all our children and their parents and carers to become involved in the “Global Reading Challenge”. It is the first of its kind that we have held at Carlton and builds on our incessant desire to foster a love of reading from foundation through to our oldest readers in year six. The project is a partnership between school and you at home and together it is our objective to clock up many reading miles through a love of reading! Your child will be issued with a reading passport and will reach a number of global destinations for each fifteen minutes of continuous reading that they attain. Your child can read any literature that is of personal interest and motivational to them – fiction books, non-fiction books, newspapers, magazines and online articles – as long as your child is reading, they are clocking up reading hours and earning reading miles! Your child’s passport will be updated at school with a stamp. All we ask is that you sign the passport regularly to confirm that your child has been reading and provide us with the title of the text you have been enjoying together at home. Once your child has read for 1 ½ hours, they will receive a bronze certificate of achievement for completing the challenge thus far. Additionally, a further 3 hours of reading will earn your child a silver certificate before the conclusion of the first round-the-world challenge at 4 ½ hours rewards your child with their first golden certificate and an all-important ‘golden token’. Each golden token for completion of the challenge will go into a lucky class pot and at the end of the Global Reading Challenge, a draw will take place for each class where the prize will be a book token for the sum of £10. The more golden tokens your child achieves, through travelling around the world as many times as they can until May 18th, the more golden tokens they will earn and their chance of winning their class prize increases! Furthermore, there will be a special prize for the child who has travelled the furthest reading miles in school! We will be launching the “Global Reading Challenge” in school on the week beginning February 27th 2012 and look forward to hearing how many miles your child has travelled. We are passionate about reading and hope that you support us in developing a life-long love of literature! If you would like any further information regarding the “Global Reading Challenge” or would like assistance with any other ideas regarding how you can encourage your child to read more, please feel free to contact us at school. |

January 30th 2012 – February 3rd 2012 IPC Work In Mrs. Blythe’s class, the children have been set the challenge of designing a fantasy bubblegum. The children created some amazing designs straight out of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. A gum which particularly got our jaws moving was Jack’s Dalek gum which failed to exterminate in your mouth! In Mr. Smith’s class, the children have been studying pop art, made famous by Andy Warhol in the 1960s. The children created their own pop art paintings using powder paints of different fruits. In Miss Spree’s class, the children have been using clay to make models of Carltonians. They used sticks and string to bind the models together and natural litter from the outdoor environment for features such as hair. The fabulous models can be seen in the KS1 corridor. Please come and have a look! Golden Book Well done to Oliver and Lewis who were nominated for awards this week. Oliver won the ‘Going the extra mile’ award for his excellent questioning in lessons and his homework, noticeably this week his ‘dessert island’ with a chocolate cake mountain in the middle. You can see Oliver’s incredible model in our new photo gallery. Additionally, Lewis was nominated for an award for his reading. Lewis is making fantastic progress in Mrs. Blythe’s English class especially in his word recognition and fluency. Keep up the brilliant work, Lewis!

January 23rd – January 27th 2012 “Pasta Poem” by Oliver Steel ‘Pasta is my favourite meal My name is Oliver Steel. When I eat pasta It makes me run faster. Pasta fills my tummy. It’s so yummy’. Well done Oliver for writing such a brilliant, food-themed poem for your homework . English The children in Class RS have been learning about questions this week. As interviewers, they were challenged to generate questions they would like to ask our resident alien, Red. They then had the opportunity to interview Red using the questions they had recorded. We compared questions which were ‘open’ (questions which gave opportunities for detailed and interesting answers) to ‘closed’ questions (which often only provided ‘yes’, ‘no’ or one-word answers). Golden Awards Congratulations to Callum in Class RS who was entered into the golden book this week for his consistent effort in school and his great enthusiasm for reading. Assessments Well done to all the children of the KS1 Unit this week for working so hard on their Reading, Writing and Mathematics quizzes. We look forward to sharing the children’s progress with you in school during our forthcoming February parent consultation meetings. News from the Mallards (Class MB) This week, the children in Mrs. Blythe’s class have been writing a non-fiction text called a non-chronological report. They have been writing about degus. The children were asked to include a description, information regarding what they eat, their habitat and one other interesting fact. One such fact is that they have yellow teeth and they also enjoy rolling around in a special ball. Artists in the unit In Miss Spree’s class, the children have been sharpening up their painting skills. They have been learning how to mix powder paints correctly and selecting correct brushes for intention and purpose. The children created some wonderful pictures of the “carltonians”. A special mention goes to Melissa from Class RS who created a gorgeous and intricate painting. You will be shortly able to view all our fantastic work based around the carltonians in our new corridor display.

January 16th – January 20th 2012 The “Carltonians” This week, the children in Miss Spree’s Woodland learning classes have been using their imaginations to help the Carltonians. The Carltonians, in case you didn’t know, are the little people who live in our woods. A dragon called Sneezal has unfortunately blown their village away so the children have been rebuilding it and working brilliantly as a team to do so. The children have enjoyed making friendship bracelets from all of the wool that the Carltonians have left behind. Food stuffs In Mr. Smith’s Science lessons, the children have been busy learning about different foods and how they help our bodies stay healthy. We have learnt about the importance of a balanced diet and the need to eat a range of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. The children also created songs to remind themselves of the food categories and how they help us. Pizza perfection The children have been designing some pizzas with Mrs. Blythe, ensuring that they include a good balance of carbohydrate, protein and fat. In the final week of half term, we will look forward to turning our ks1 unit into a pizza parlour and bake our mouth-watering creations. International Learning We have been learning about life in Bangladesh this week and comparing it to our lives in England. We used Google Earth to look at Bangladesh and compared the houses and villages to those at home. We learned that life for the children in Bangladesh is very different to ours and in most respects, considerably harder. We realised how we take comforts such as clean, running water and warm, safe housing for granted and studied all about the dangers of droughts and famine, conditions that continue to affect Bangladesh and punish its people. And from the ‘Golden Book’… Well done to Luke in Class AS who was given the ‘reader of the week’ award by Mr. Smith and Mrs. Cox in acknowledgement of his drive to improve his reading fluency. Also, well done to Jack in Mrs. Blythe’s English class who deservedly scooped ‘writer of the week’. Jack is an enthusiastic writer and is always one of the first to put pencil to paper. Keep up the hard work, boys and well done Hungry Homework! We continue to receive some fantastic homework in the unit. Well done to Corey and Luke in Class RS for their creations this week. Corey created a fantastic diorama of an island using food items in part to create objects of interest whilst Luke created a dream catcher made from old food packaging. Presumably, if you hang it over your bed, you wake up feeling very hungry in the mornings!

Mrs Blythe would like to thank all children for their contributions during last week’s E-Safety TASC week. She was hugely impressed with the wide range of ideas that children had to share on how to keep safe whilst using the computers. If parents would like any further information of computer safety please check out http://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/ which has an excellent section for parents. It also has a section of E Safety games for children to play which will reinforce messages taught by school. |

January 9th – January 13th 2012 Measuring Up in the Woodland Area This week, the Goldfinches and the Magpies have been learning how to measure. They have studied units of measurement and had lots of fun finding lengths and circumferences. The children studied old imperial measurements and compared them to metric measurements and then completed a series of measurement challenges. Goldfinches were teamed up with Magpies and went into the woodland to explore, collecting living and nonliving things to measure. The Goldfinches also took on the role of teachers to support the learning of the Magpies as they calculated the length of branches and the circumferences of tree trunks. To finish we played ‘pass the squeeze’ in a huge circle. E-Safety Week in the KS1 Unit This week, we have been learning about the importance of staying safe when using technology. We have learnt that the internet can be a really fun place but we also need to protect ourselves when using it. The children have completed a range of drama activities and explored fun videos to learn how we should keep ourselves safe and what to do if we find something that makes us feel unhappy. We then set ourselves the challenge of creating or presenting something to show our e-safety knowledge to others and hopefully teach them how to stay safe when using mobile phones, computers and the internet. We have been really busy making posters, creating plays and designing mouse mats for the ICT suite to show others the fundamental rules of staying safe. The children have really enjoyed the work and have learnt some essential life skills to boot. Guided Reading using ICT As part of their daily ERIC activities (Everybody Reading in Class), the Magpies this week went into the ICT suite in order to sharpen up their reading and spelling skills. They learnt that an incorrectly spelt word gains a red squiggle and were able to correct their spelling errors as and when they occurred. The Magpies were asked to spell the words they could see in the cartoons of their word document. All the words were linked to this week’s spellings (words beginning with ‘ou’). The Magpies are becoming very able spellers and the use of computers helps to add a more interesting dimension to the teaching of both spellings and phonics. IPC Homework We continue to be astounded by the fantastic examples of ICT work which the children are bringing into the unit. In particular, the art work is of a superb standard. The children have been sharing some great collages made from food packaging. A huge well done to the children who have also been adorning their aprons and having lots of baking fun in the kitchen! Puzzling Punctuation This week, the children have been sharpening up their skills of punctuation and playing a variety of punctuation games. We have learnt that exclamation marks ask us to read a sentence with animation and expression and that often questions begin with a bank of key words (who, what, when, why, where, which and how). The children have also been using kung-fu punctuation as a fun way of adding punctuation to their sentences.

January 3rd – January 6th 2012 Homework Choices Please see the grid below for your child’s homework options for the new half term. Our new theme is ‘Food’ Please ensure that your child brings their homework each Wednesday. Thank you. Restaurant Fun This week, we transformed our KS1 hall into a restaurant. We had lots of fun creating items you would associate with places of dining using our bodies by playing ‘food statues’. We then discussed the different roles involved in working in a restaurant and the items we would expect to find in one before we divided into teams and produced our own items for the restaurant. Everyone worked hard as a team and created one of the finest eateries in Barnsley! Elsewhere around the classes The children have been working across the unit with Mrs Blythe, Mr Smith and Miss Spree this week. The children imagined how it would be to go without food and water and studied areas of the world where this is a desperate daily reality. They have been matching fruits to the countries they are typically grown and learning about the conditions which determine where fruits grow as well as looking for evidence of food in the outdoor environment. The children have also enjoyed participating in their first woodland learning lessons of 2012 despite the wintery weather! Golden Awards Congratulations to Jessica H for receiving a richly deserved handwriting award in this week’s golden award assembly. Jessica is a super hand-writer and always produces well-presented work.
