CARLTON FOUNDATION UNIT

Hello Everyone     22nd February 2012

Our topic this half term is focused on The Jungle. We will be carrying out a variety of activities within this topic including learning about animals and plants, places near and far and creating patterns. We also hope to have a visit from some real jungle animals. We will be learning about and celebrating Easter for the last two weeks of term.

On 27th February we will be having a visit from the local firemen. They will give the children a short fire safety talk and the children will then be able to look around the fire engine. This is subject to no emergencies occurring at that time. Due to the fire engine being fitted with CCTV cameras we require the attached consent form to be filled in for your child to take part in this session.

Parents Consultations

Parents meetings will take place for all children in the week beginning 27th February. Miss Chappell and Miss Hopkinson will carry out meetings for full time children (F2) and Miss Tyers and Mrs Arnold will be doing meetings for part time children (F1). We endeavour to provide a suitable time for everyone and if you cannot make any of the times on the letter please come and see us and we will fit you in at another time.

Vision Tests

The vision tests for F2 children will be carried out on 28th February. If you have not yet filled in a consent form you can still bring it in up to this day.

PE

The focus for this half term within PE sessions will be ball skills for the full time children (F2). It has been noted that some children are not regularly bringing a PE kit to school. Please ensure your child has a PE kit containing black shorts, and a white t-shirt and that it is in school all week. We will be closely monitoring who has a PE kit this half term. Part time children will continue to carry out busy feet sessions.

Woodland Learning

We will be resuming our woodland learning sessions for both F1 and F2 children this half term. In order for you child to take part in these sessions please can you make sure your child has a pair of wellies at school. If your child has a pair of wellies at school, please can you check them to see if they still fit.

Snack Money

Can you please put your donation of snack money in the piggy bank (moneybox) located next to the dinner menu. We ask for a donation of £1.00 per week. This money enables us to provide extra snack items and buy ingredients for baking and cooking activities.

If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to ask us.

Thank you

Miss Chappell

CARLTON FOUNDATION UNIT

Hello Everyone     9th January 2011

Welcome back after the Christmas break and welcome to the new children and their families that have joined us. Also welcome to our new teacher Miss Hopkinson who will be working mainly with the full time (F2) children.

Our theme for this half term is Fairytales. We will be reading lots of stories and learning about the way they are structured, the characters and settings.

Please can we remind you that children should be at school for 9am. If your child is full time (F2) and you arrive at school after 9.10 am you should take them to reception to sign in.

The time between 9am and 9.10am or 12.15pm and 12.25pm is for you to carry out a set activity with your child. Please find your child’s name and help them to complete that activity. You may have noticed that some of the children have moved into different groups and there are also some new groups, the aim of this is to enable children to work with those they may not know as well.

Chinese New Year

The week commencing the 23rd January the children will be learning about Chinese New Year and the Chinese culture. This is part of our curriculum that enables children to gain an awareness of other cultures and beliefs and how they differ from their own.

Parent Reading

Please remember to sign up to a parent reader slot if you would like to give up an hour of your time to read with the children. The dates and times are displayed on the signing up sheet in the snack area. For those parents that cannot make any of the dates but would like to take part we will be adding more dates after the ones listed.

PE

All full time children need to bring their PE kit to school on Mondays & leave it at school all week. All children will be doing PE on a Wednesday however sometimes this may need to change so we require your child’s kit to be in school all week. Please make sure that all clothes brought to school are named as this enables us to return items of clothing easily.

Wellies

Please can you make sure your child has a pair of wellies at school for outdoor play. At this time of year it is important children have appropriate outdoor footwear. If your child has a pair of wellies at school, please can you check them to see if they still fit.

Pumps

All full time (F2) children require a pair of pumps in school which they should change into when they arrive at school. Part time (F1) children are no longer required to wear pumps in school. This decision has been taken to enable there to be more time for teaching and learning.

Carlton Primary School

Foundation Stage

Just a reminder tomorrow is the visit to the pantomime. There will be no usual nursery session. For nursery children going to the pantomime please come to school for 12.30pm here we will register children.

Full time children come to school at 9.00am. Full time children not going to the pantomime still come to school for the full day.

On Thursday 15th December we will be having our craft afternoon. There will be no nursery sessions on this day also, as the craft afternoon replaces this. Parents of full time children come to school for 1.30pm so you and your child can join in the fun.

This year we have a post box in the unit for Christmas cards. Please write on the child’s full name and whether they are an f1 or f2 on the front of the card. Staff will then sort the cards. All cards will be sent home on Wednesday 14th December.

Please remember there is a ‘Letters and Sounds’ session for parents to attend on Tuesday 13th December please return your reply slip if you would like to take part. This is an important aid to support your child in their reading and writing development.

Thank you

Kelly Baird

This term the children have been learning all about their senses. We have been tasting foods and making sweet and savoury dishes to try. The children have used different media to create textured pictures and described sights, smells and sounds from Bonfire night. We made feely boxes and had to guess what was inside and explain to others what they could feel. The children have also enjoyed making musical instruments from junk modelling materials.

The children have been enjoying the outdoor area especially our sand and water areas

The F2 children have been working hard in letters and sounds and have begun to write sounds and are blending them to create words. Our F1 children have been working on basic nursery skills, concentrating on counting and identifying numbers. We have made biscuit dough and created numbers adding the correct number of smarties to decorate them. Yummy!!

We would like to welcome our new families to the unit and look forward to working with you over the coming year. This week Lisa and Kelly have been visiting our new nursery children who live in the area. Friday we had an open afternoon for the new children and their families to visit us and look around the classroom and the Woodland. All children have been busy painting a picture of themselves for our Barn Owls and Kingfishers display, they have also enjoyed playing in the post office role play area and the listening tent where they can listen to stories. The children have begun their speaking and listening and Letters and Sounds activities which take place everyday. Next week we begin our new routine for teaching and learning alongside our theme which this half term is 'People who Help us'.
